BRIEF HISTORY

Medicalplastic was set up in October 1971 to develop and produce a post-operative drainage system for surgical use and in orthopaedic traumatology in particular.

 

After much study and experimentation by its designer, Prof. A. Bianchi Maiocchi, the EMODREN, a continuous low-pressure suction drain representing the state of the art in terms of general performance, was patented and produced in 1972.

 

Marketed through a single distributor and backed up by scientific documentation, the product soon became well known and gained leadership on the Italian market in just a few years.

 

It still enjoys this position in the top end of the market thanks to the high levels of product quality maintained and improved over time and constant monitoring of the field to stay in touch with users’ needs.

 

 

 

 

In 1974/75, the product was launched in Spain and Portugal, where it was highly appreciated in the top end of the market.

 

The two base models produced in 1972 grew into a full range of four models offered in 25 versions, complete with a vast range of accessories enabling EMODREN to be adapted to the needs of all surgical specializations.

 

In 1983, Medicalplastic developed a product hitherto known only in the Soviet Union,

the ILIZAROV COMPRESSION-DISTRACTION DEVICE, and started to produce and market it.

It was a new generation circular external fixator to be used with a surgical technique that was completely revolutionary in the field of orthopaedic traumatology, having been developed by G. A. Ilizarov back in 1953 but unknown in the west.

 

Thanks in part to support from the A.S.A.M.I. (Association for the Study and Application of Ilizarov Methods), the device soon gained leadership in the field of circular external fixators.

 

After an initial period in which the technique was being learned, the device was modified and extended in certain parts to simplify its use.

 

The production of books explaining how to use the device was deemed of crucial importance.

Continuing to use a single distributor for each country, the device was introduced in Italy in 1983 and in other European countries between 1984 and 1986.

 

Distribution in the United States began in 1987 and it was through the American distributor that worldwide distribution started up in 1989.

In 1998 Medicalplastic decided to design and produce a monolateral fixator.

 

The original name of the project - “MMF” (Medicalplastic Monolateral Fixator) – was subsequently adopted as the definitive name of the monolateral fixator.

 

The MMF system includes:

 

• a fixation unit (standard, short, reduced for humerus and paediatrics)

• a reduction unit

• an instrument kit for applying the system

• a full range of pins

 

 

Medicalplastic’s quality control system has EN ISO 13485:2016 certification issued by “TÜV SÜD Product Service” and UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 certification issued by “TÜV Italia s.r.l.”.

 

Emodren drainage systems (IIa class devices) are certified by “TÜV SÜD Product Service” as conforming to Annex II, point 3, Directive 93/42/EEC.

 

Orthopaedic fixation systems (wires, pins) (IIb class devices) are certified by “TÜV SÜD Product Service” as conforming to Annex II, point 3, Directive 93/42/EEC.

 

Medicalplastic s.r.l. has been registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under no. 9611863, since 1994 and undergoes routine inspection regarding the fabrication, packaging and labelling of products in the “Ilizarov fixator” range for export to the United States market.
